Established in 2014 by Master Potter James Olney, Oak Cliff Pottery is one of the few studios in Texas led by a classically educated Master Potter. James founded the studio with a vision to bring the finest handmade ceramics to North Texas, while creating an open, inspiring space for both beginners and advanced students alike. In addition to custom and designer ceramics, we offer team-building workshops, private group classes, advanced courses, and couples’ classes.
What is a Master Potter?
The title of Master Potter is a mark of both skill and tradition, earned through years of dedicated apprenticeship with an established master—often three to ten years of intensive practice and study. Only a Master Potter can bestow the title on another. For generations, this path allowed young potters to refine their craft, earn respect, and establish themselves as accomplished artisans. Today, formal apprenticeships are rare in the U.S., making the title both prestigious and uncommon. Only a select few hold it, and even fewer pass on their knowledge through structured training, preserving a centuries-old legacy of artistry and mastery.
